1. What Is Poll City Social

Poll City Social is a public civic network for Canadian residents. It is not a general-purpose social media platform. Its purpose is to strengthen democratic participation by connecting voters to their elected officials and candidates at the municipal, provincial, and federal levels.

Features include: following elected officials and candidates, voting in community polls, submitting questions to representatives, joining civic interest groups, and engaging with local issues. Poll City Social is distinct from Poll City’s campaign management tools, which are available only to campaign customers.

2. Account Creation & Eligibility

  • You must be at least 13 years of age to create an account on Poll City Social.
  • You must provide an accurate email address. You may sign in via Google or Apple — we receive only your name and email from those providers.
  • You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account credentials. Do not share your password. Notify us immediately at support@poll.city if you believe your account has been compromised.
  • Each person may maintain one account. Creating multiple accounts to manipulate votes or circumvent a suspension is prohibited.

3. Acceptable Use

Poll City Social exists to support open, informed civic participation. Acceptable uses include:

  • Following elected officials, candidates, and civic groups
  • Voting in community polls on local and national issues
  • Submitting genuine questions to officials or candidates
  • Sharing opinions on civic topics in posts and comments
  • Reporting content that violates these Terms (see Section 7)
  • Expressing support for or interest in a candidate’s campaign

4. Content Standards & Prohibited Behaviour

The following are strictly prohibited on Poll City Social:

  • Harassment and threats: Content that threatens, intimidates, or bullies any person, including officials, candidates, or other users.
  • Impersonation: Claiming to be an elected official, candidate, public figure, or Poll City employee when you are not.
  • Voter suppression: Posting false information about when, where, or how to vote; attempting to intimidate voters; or encouraging others to avoid voting.
  • Election misinformation: Deliberately spreading false information about election results, voting procedures, or candidate eligibility.
  • Hate speech: Content that attacks persons based on race, national origin, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or other protected characteristics.
  • Illegal content: Content that violates any applicable Canadian federal or provincial law, including defamation, criminal harassment, and obscenity.
  • Spam and manipulation: Automated posting, purchasing followers or poll votes, coordinated inauthentic behaviour, or using the platform to direct unsolicited commercial messages.
  • Foreign interference: Using Poll City Social on behalf of, or funded by, a foreign principal to influence a Canadian election.
  • Personal data exposure: Posting private personal information (addresses, phone numbers, financial data) of any person without their consent.

5. Public Content & Display Name

Questions you submit to officials or candidates and comments you post may be displayed publicly alongside your display name. By submitting content, you grant Poll City a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to display that content on the platform and in related communications (for example, showing a question to a candidate).

You retain ownership of original content you create. Poll City will not sell your content to third parties.

Poll votes are aggregated and anonymised — individual votes are never disclosed to candidates, officials, or the public.

6. Voter-Submitted Data

When you express interest in a candidate’s campaign — such as requesting a lawn sign, volunteering, or expressing support — Poll City may, with your explicit consent, share your contact information with that campaign. You will see a clear disclosure before any such sharing occurs and will have the option to decline.

You can revoke consent by visiting your Privacy Choices page (/legal/privacy-choices) or contacting privacy@poll.city.

Your postal code is used to identify your local riding and municipality. We do not collect GPS coordinates.

7. Reporting & Blocking

Poll City Social provides in-app tools to report content or users that violate these Terms. To report a post, comment, question, or user, use the Report button on the relevant item. Reports are reviewed by Poll City staff.

You may block another user at any time. Blocking prevents that user from viewing your profile or interacting with your content. Blocked users are not notified that they have been blocked.

To report urgent safety concerns, contact us directly at support@poll.city.

8. Moderation

Poll City reviews reports of content that may violate these Terms. We may take any of the following actions, depending on severity:

  • Remove or hide the content in question
  • Issue a warning to the account holder
  • Temporarily suspend the account
  • Permanently terminate the account
  • Report the activity to appropriate law enforcement authorities

If your content is removed or your account is suspended, you may appeal by contacting support@poll.city with the subject line “Moderation Appeal.” We will review appeals within 14 days.

9. Data Handling

Your personal data is handled in accordance with our Poll City Social Privacy Policy, which covers what we collect, how we use it, who has access, and your rights as a PIPEDA data subject.

We do not sell your personal data. We do not use your data for advertising. We do not track you across other websites or apps.

10. Account Deletion

You may delete your Poll City Social account at any time. See our Account Deletion page for full instructions and what happens to your data when you delete.

12. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the applicable federal laws of Canada, without regard to conflict of law principles. Any disputes arising from these Terms or your use of Poll City Social are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Ontario.

We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be communicated to registered users via email or in-app notification before they take effect. Your continued use of Poll City Social after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
